What a birth chart reading actually is
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. An astrologer reads that map: where the sun, moon, and planets sat, which sign was rising, and how all of it relates. Because it is a system, you can ask about one part of your life and get an answer built on something the astrologer can point to.
The questions below are in plain language. You do not need to know what a house or a transit is. A good astrologer translates as they go.
What to bring
Three things, and the third matters more than people expect.
Your birth date. The day, month, and year.
Your birth place. The city is enough.
Your birth time. As exact as you can get it. Your birth certificate usually has it. The time sets your rising sign and the houses, where most of the personal detail in a reading comes from. If you cannot find it, say so at the start. Your astrologer can still read the planets, and some will narrow the time down by working backward from events in your life.

The astrologer can see the whole map. You have only been living in part of it.

Not a description of a person. A description of a dynamic.
11. "Why do I keep attracting the same kind of relationship?"
Your chart usually has an answer, and naming the pattern is how you shift it.
12. "How compatible are my chart and my partner's?"

Timing and transits
Your birth chart never changes. The sky keeps moving over it, and that movement is what astrologers call transits. Timing questions are about where the moving planets meet your chart now and in the year ahead.

24. "What does the next twelve months look like in my chart?"
Ask for the two or three windows that matter.
25. "Am I in or near my Saturn return, and what does that mean for me?"
Saturn returns to its birth position roughly every 29 years, so the first one lands around age 27 to 30. If you are in that range, ask.
26. "Is this a good time to start something, or a time to finish and clear?"
Acting in the wrong season is exhausting. Knowing which you are in is a relief.
27. "When is my chart most supported for a big move, a launch, or a commitment?"
The astrologer will look for the windows that support what you are planning.
28. "Is there a transit coming that I should prepare for?"
Not to fear it. To meet it ready.
29. "What happened in my chart around a specific past event, and what does that tell me?"
Give a date: a breakup, a move, a loss. Seeing what was moving then shows how your chart responds to pressure.
30. "What is the one thing I should focus on this year, according to my chart?"

Questions an astrologer cannot answer
An astrologer can tell you when your chart is active for relationships. They cannot tell you a stranger's name or the date you will meet. Ask about windows, not deliveries.
They cannot diagnose you or predict a health outcome. Health questions are for your doctor. A season of low energy in your chart is a cue to rest, not a diagnosis.
They cannot tell you whether an investment will pay or whether to sign a contract. They can show you how you handle money and what season you are in. The decision, and the professional advice around it, is yours.
They will not go deep on someone who has not agreed to be read. Compatibility with a partner who shared their details is one thing. Pulling a full chart on someone who does not know is another, and many astrologers decline.
