The one thing that matters most
Know your question. Everything else on this page is secondary to that. A reading with a clear question is a different experience from a reading without one: the advisor has somewhere to go, the first minute is not spent finding the subject, and the answer is about something instead of about everything.

The practical part
Choose a quiet place. Somewhere you can speak freely, hear clearly, and not be interrupted for the length of the reading. Close the door. Tell the house you are on a call.
Give yourself a few minutes before. Do not arrive at the reading from the middle of an argument or a work call. Sit down early. Breathe. Bring the question to mind and, if it is about a person, bring them to mind too.
Have a pen and paper. Readings go by faster than you expect, and the detail that seemed small at minute eight is the one you want at midnight. Write down what lands.
Decide how you want to take it. Phone if you want privacy and ease. Video if seeing a face helps you talk. Neither is more accurate.
Eat something. It sounds silly. It is not. A reading is a conversation about the things that matter most to you, and you want to be steady for it.
What not to do
Do not test the advisor. Withholding your question to see what they come up with wastes the first few minutes and gets you a colder reading. You are not there to catch them out. You are there to hear something useful.
Do not decide the answer in advance. If you walk in knowing what you want to hear, you will hear it whether or not it is said. Notice that in yourself and the reading gets better.
Do not bring a list of twelve things. Bring one, and a second in reserve. If there is time, there is time.
Do not hide the real question behind a safer one. Advisors can usually tell, and the reading spends its energy getting to the thing you could have said in the first minute.
Do not expect dates. Ask about the path. Timelines are the least reliable part of any reading, and good preparation includes knowing that going in.
