Where the model came from
Billing by the minute is inherited from the phone lines. When psychic readings first moved onto the phone, the phone company already billed calls by the minute, so readings did too. The big online marketplaces kept the model when they moved onto apps and the web, because it solved three problems for them at once.
It is easy to advertise. A small number next to an advisor's name looks approachable in a way that a full price does not. It is easy to run. The site does not have to decide how long a reading should be, and neither does the advisor. And it pays the site more the longer you stay on the line, which means every part of the design, from the opening offer to the way a call ends, leans toward keeping you there.
That is not a conspiracy. It is a business model. Many gifted advisors work under it, and plenty of readings billed by the minute are good readings.
What the clock does to a reading
The trouble is what it does to the two people on the call. When you are paying by the minute, you can feel it. You talk faster. You skip the detail that would have mattered. You do not let a silence sit, and a good reading has silences in it. On the other end, the advisor knows exactly what every extra minute is worth, and the reading bends toward that, whether anyone intends it or not.
The other trouble is the total. A reading billed by the minute has no price until it ends. The number you saw was never the number you would pay. Most people who feel burned by a reading were not burned by a bad advisor. They were burned by a bill they did not see coming.
Why we chose a flat price instead

The Deep Dive, 30 to 40 minutes, $135. The Hour, 60 minutes, $185. Prime evening hours run a few dollars more, and late nights a little higher still, and every price is on the calendar before you choose.
Your advisor is paid for the reading, not for how long you stay on the line. If there is more to talk about at the end of your session, you can add time with one tap, and the price is shown first. Nothing ever runs on its own.
